What a beautiful piece of music. This time both John and Paul contributed to the writing, making it a true Lennon/McCartney track. The song was inspired by the true story of Melanie Coe, who left home at the age of 17 – not with a man from the motor trade but with a croupier she had met. She disappeared for ten days but was found by police, having told some friends where her boyfriend worked.
This track only features two Beatles – Paul and John – and only as vocalists. The orchestration, arranged by Mike Leander, features the first female musician to perform on a Beatles song. She plays the harp.
It is said that American composer Ned Rorem declared this song as “being the equal of anything Schubert wrote”.
