While not strictly an Australian band, they're from New Zealand and we like to claim anything or anyone who is successful. And the boys were based here for a while ...
The band was formed at Auckland University in 1971 by primary school mates Tim Finn & Mike Chunn, along with Phil Judd, Noel Crombie and Robert Gillies. By 1972, the band had become their full-time job, initially playing as Split Ends. Along the way, two key members - Tim's brother Neil and Eddie Rayner - joined the band and moved it towards the version of the band that we know so well.
After a stint in Australia and then in the UK, the Enz (the spelling had been changed to acknowledge their NZ heritage) came back to Australia and produced a string hit singles and albums, each with the quirkiness that we associate with the band.
By 1984, Tim Finn had already produced a solo album and other members had come and gone. The last album - See Ya Round - saw a version of Split Enz devoid of any original members.
The spirit of Split Enz lived on with several members being part of Crowded House - most notably Neil Finn. There are occasional reunions of Split Enz including a recent set of performances across New Zealand (2008) and a one-off reunion for the bushfire relief concert (Sound Relief) at the MCG in March 2009. |
